They say you should always be keeping an eye out for new job opportunities, even if you are happy with your current position. Of course, given the state of the economy these past few years, you might be forgiven if you've been focused completely on keeping the job that you have.
But conditions are changing, albeit slowly. Unemployment is now at 6.6 percent, and it is clear that businesses are showing a willingness to hire aggressively. This is particularly true in states like Texas, which has one of the lower unemployment rates in the nation. In fact, in recent years, a large number of information technology jobs in Houston have become available to those willing to take them.
Could you be one of them? Maybe you still aren't sure about leaving your current position. Perhaps it is time to consider some important factors:
- Do you feel that you are reaching your full potential? At any job, you will inevitably fall into a routine. Some jobs are challenging enough that this is not a problem, but at others you find yourself getting bored, and seeking out more exciting opportunities.
- Do you like the corporate culture where you currently work? This is more important that people think. If you do not enjoy interactions with your coworkers, it is much more difficult to be productive with them.
- Do you have a good work-life balance? If you don't particularly like your job but you're still working late hours, it may be time to look elsewhere.
