The blog Javarevisited, which covers the Java programming language and related technology, recently featured a post about the ways in which programmers can polish their skills.
Here are some of the tips:
- Keep practicing coding. It may seem obvious at first, but it is still important to emphasize that programmers must regularly practice coding. "By doing coding, you also realize your mistakes in designing, error handling, threading and then go back to those respective skill to improve," the post reads. Really, it's like any activity—the more you work at it, the better you will be.
Catch up on your reading. Along that same vein, programmers should seek out useful books about coding. Practical experience is always important, but so is theory. By learning from author who are great programmers, you may pick up some lessons that you never thought of before. And don't limit yourself to books. There are plenty of great blogs out there that also hold helpful information.
Participate in reviews. Reviewing someone else's code is a great opportunity for two reasons. First, it helps that person identify mistakes and improve their own coding skills. Second, it gives the reviewer additional perspective that can be carried over to their own work.
