Say you're considering a change of careers. Maybe you aren't quite ready to leave your job just yet, but you are starting to wonder what your life would be like if you worked in a completely different field.
It happens to all of us. After enough time on a job, even one we like, we inevitably start to wonder about the possibility of other opportunities. These days, there are a growing number, especially in high-tech industries that require software developers and other programmers. In fact, there are many career opportunities in Houston that are open for the taking.
But how do you decide when it is time to start looking around? A recent article on Fact Company offers some tips. It quotes Karen Elizaga, a New York-based executive coach who was a corporate lawyer before deciding that she needed something else.
"It took 13 years for me to realize—when I was knee-deep in legal documents at a law firm and feeding my hungry soul a steady stream of chocolate to compensate—that in fact, my sweet spot did not live within the four walls of a law firm," she told the news source.
You should ask yourself important questions about your job. Are you only in it for the money? Do you wish you could be anywhere else? Are you holding yourself back from new opportunities because of all the time and money you spent to get where you are today?
This is not to say that the answers to these questions should necessarily lead you to quit. These decisions take time. But they are worth dwelling on, especially when there are so many other interesting places where you could be.
