In order to get a sense of what jobs and skills will be the most in demand in the coming year, it helps to look at what employers were looking for last year.

According to statistics from Stack Overflow, which compiled a list of common searches conducted by hiring managers, the most sought after skill was Java, by far. In fact, out of a total of 14,000 queries, Java skills were mentioned about 22 percent of the time—far more often than any other skill. This is partly due to the language's usefulness in developing for mobile devices.

"Java is hugely popular for a wide variety of companies, it's the most common language across the world that developers use and are proficient at, and it's relevant knowledge for a growing market in Android development," Will Cole, project manager at Stack Overflow, said. "Love it or hate it, many people know Java, and many companies want those developers."

Other surveys, like one conducted by Dice, have come up with similar results. In addition, the surveys suggest that Java will remain an in-demand skill in the coming year.

This is crucial for programmers who may be considering a career change. If they already have Java skills, all they have to worry about is ensuring that they are up to par. If they do not, they now know exactly what to focus on before beginning a search of career opportunities in Houston.
